This post is part of our “save this” how-to series.
If you have a site with multiple types of content (think both recipes and how-tos and crafts) the “save this recipe for later” box is probably a little vague on your site. Maybe it says “save for later” or “email me this post”?
Good news: you can now have powerful, unique call-to-actions for each type of content.
Here’s one example of how our client Play Party Plan has implemented this:
To accomplish this, we’re going to use Dynamic Connector Block and two separate blocks (but only one will display at a time).
The benefits of using Dynamic Connector Block to insert “save this ___” blocks:
- Craft specific CTAs to engage readers.
- Optionally exclude categories that don’t need a CTA.
Display “save this recipe” on recipe posts only
Step 1: Set up your “save for later” functionality
I’m not going to focus on configuration in this post, but you can use any “save for later” method. We have a post that mentions a couple options for setting up “save this recipe” functionality.
Step 2: Install Dynamic Block Connector
Presently, we only have a paid version of DCB available. You’ll need to go to the sales page to purchase it.
However, if you want to wait for the free version you can 100% follow this tutorial without buying Pro. Unfortunately for us (and you), it’s in the review stage… which can take 3-months based on our recent experiences. When it’s available for free, Dynamic Connector Block will be available on the WordPress repo.
This plugin allows you to say “only show this block if it matches these conditions”. In our case, the condition is “assigned categories include ‘Recipes’” (more on this in step #4).
Step 3: Use the block editor to style your block
Create a new Conditional Content item, then add and style your block. Assuming your theme supports core WordPress block properties, you should be able to style pretty much every element. We have a post that provides some code to start your block off.
Make sure this block uses your custom CTA!
Step 4: Limit display by category
Now we’re finally getting into the fun part! THIS is where the magic happens.
In the sidebar, add a ruleset with the following definition (using whatever category you need):
- Category
- Contains
- “Recipes” (or whatever you use)
Display “save this craft” on craft posts only
This step is super easy. Repeat the above steps #3 and #4. Make sure that in step #3 you update the call-to-action and in step #4 you change the category to “Crafts” (or whatever you use).
Insert “save this ___” across your site
Now that we have Dynamic Connector Block set up, it’s time to insert that block site-wide. That block will display whichever “Conditional Content” item matches the post being viewed.
If you’re not familiar with how to insert blocks using Automatic Block Inserter, check out this generic instruction or read how to insert blocks directly above the recipe card for a more detailed explanation.
THAT’S IT.
Now, excuse me while I nerd out about how cool these two plugins are together.
In 2024 we launched new plugin solutions & a templated theme. These tools offer custom development, easier editing & tech optimizations accessible to bloggers of all sizes.
