Block themes aren’t “the future” of WordPress. I personally use this phrase, but it’s incomplete. They’ve been around for 3 years, built on a Gutenberg editor that’s been around for 6 years. To avoid a block theme at this point is to choose ignorance and refuse growth.
Gutenberg was released in 2018. Full Site Editing (now Site Editing) was released in 2021. Since late 2021, every WordPress default theme (Twenty Twenty-Two, Twenty Twenty-Three, and Twenty Twenty-Four) has been a block theme. Block Themes are happening right now, and the people who embrace them are the ones who will capitalize on their advantages first.
Remember when Gutenberg was released and everyone was afraid of it? Now we share with our friends how much better the editor experience is, followed by “I don’t know why I didn’t switch earlier.”
Remember the year dubbed “the year of video”? Were you at the front of the crowd or behind the curve?
Block themes automatically benefit from WordPress updates and features. Classic themes get new features only when back-supporting is straightforward. Which do you want?
