New Pinterest Feature: Hover Pin-it Buttons

If you’re using the Pinterest extension for Chrome, you may have noticed that in the middle of last week, a new feature has been added to your browser: hovering pin-it buttons over all images when you browse the web!

What does this mean for you as a viewer?

Great, easy access to pinning the images you want!

What does this mean for you as an author?

Any viewers who use Chrome can now easily pin the images they want!

If you’re using an image-hover-button plugin, you can now re-evaluate if you need this on your website.

• Our WordPress plugin now duplicates the hover image… so unless the reader turns their button off, our site is now less pleasing!
• So, we can hope that most of our viewers are using this Pinterest browser extension and remove our plugin if we want. Since our plugin uses valuable resources, removing this feature will always be preferable – fewer plugins means faster loading times means better Google preference.

Do we have to remove the plugin?

By no means do we have to do anything! If you know your viewers aren’t using Chrome, you can be sure they don’t have this extension, and you probably want to keep the plugin. Or maybe you don’t have a satisfactory back-up method for people to pin your content (such as a regular, non-hovering pin-it button easily available) so it’s important to keep this plugin enabled for now.

Personally, I am keeping mine – I’m not convinced this plugin is that widespread, or that people won’t be disabling that function as it’s a little distracting. Plus, my images totally look prettier than the Pinterest image! 😉
