I’ve caught myself at times sitting in front of a massive 27-inch monitor while scrolling away on my smartphone’s five-inch screen. Why? I have no idea. It makes no sense whatsoever, does it?
And yet, I’m not alone.
According to the Pew Research Center’s latest report on smartphone use, nearly 64% of U.S. adults own a smartphone, and company after company report that more and more of their traffic comes from mobile devices.
It turns out that lots of us are deferring to our smartphones when we’re searching for information, connecting with friends and family, and generating content.
Mobile is so critical now that Google’s April 2015 algorithm update included a search ranking boost for sites that are mobile friendly. On other words, if your food blog isn’t mobile friendly yet, it needs to become a priority.
Is your food blog mobile friendly?
If you’ve submitted your food blog to Google’s Webmaster Tools, you can quickly find out if your site is mobile friendly and even get pointers on how to further optimize it.
- Open your Webmaster Tools.
- Go to Search Traffic > Mobile Usability.
That’s it! Google provides all of the information that you need to get your site mobile ready.
If you haven’t set up your Webmaster Tools, you can take a look at your site on your own smartphone to see how well it translates there. (When you’re done, go set up your Webmaster Tools.)
What does a mobile friendly site look like?
- The design fits the smaller screen while maintaining visibility.
- Buttons – both navigation and action – are easy to click on with your finger.
- Content sections are divided into succinct paragraphs that can be read without endless scrolling.
- Images are compressed to facilitate speedy loading.
How can I make my WordPress site mobile friendly?
If you didn’t design for mobile, you can still have a mobile friendly site using a WordPress Plugin. Two popular options are WPtouch and JetPack. Both ensure a flawless mobile experience for your blog readers without too much additional labor on your part.
