Efficiently encode images

“Encoding images” refers to image optimization, or a reduction in the image file size. Optimized images load faster and consume less cellular data. Google recommends an image compression level of 85 or lower.

Recommendations

  • Use an image compression plugin to optimize images on upload.
  • Manually compress theme images or add them for inclusion to image optimization plugin.
  • Move external images into your media library to be optimized with your site images.
  • Disable and hard-code Gravatar.

Associated Plugins

An image compression plugin, such as ShortPixel, will ensure all versions of your image are reduced in file size. We’ve found their compression and quality standards to be most satisfactory to clients.

Other plugins

  • If you’re using Imagify, you’ll need to use their “Ultra” setting to ensure your images meet Google’s compression standards.
  • If you’re using WP Smush, this plugin will only save original image files or compress full-size images if you have their premium version.
  • If you’re using EWWW, this plugin does not save original image files and may not meet Google’s compression standards as consistently.

Other Considerations

  • Some plugins may display uncompressed images, in which case we recommend reaching out to support.
